Over the course of the last several years I have become increasingly more uncomfortable with the idea of social media. I think that we have lost the plot of what we were trying to gain from that experience. Really though, who can blame us, most of us were children when we got on Myspace of Facebook for the first time. By the time that we knew what it was exactly we were being sucked into we were already in it. I for my part, have regrets.
The first step of this process was trying to find a way to work within the social media system in a way that I felt met my goals. Those goals were (and perhaps still are) to share information about my life to a select group of people who I have let in on it. To share photos that I have taken, and books that I have read. To perhaps write about politics or social commentary. I had some success with this, especially on Instagram I felt like I was often able to do those things. But then you’re still on Instagram. You’re still taking in so much about so many people all the time; and worse, ads that fund people and businesses that I find to be vile.
So then I just stopped going on. Deleted the app off my phone and didn’t re-download it. That was fine too for the most part, but I still wanted to do those things that I was doing. I still wanted an online platform to share things on. Hence this. I don’t fully have a plan for this at the moment outside of the things I have just described. I make no promises to you dear reader nor to myself about what this is or what it will become. Right now this is just a New Years resolution, and it is my belief that all good resolutions start not on January 1st, but rather the moment that you are resolved to do them.
